Our Favourite Classic and Independent Cinemas​​​​​​​ in West London

West London is blessed with a lot of things. There are Michelin starred restaurants, buzzing high streets, beautiful parks and plenty of excellent retailers. However, what you might not expect is the multitude of classic and independent cinemas in the area. 

As film buffs ourselves, we host regular screening nights in our Quintain Living apartments and the Alameda building even has its own outdoor five-metre rooftop cinema screen. But whether it’s date night or a trip out with a friend, sometimes nothing beats the atmosphere and experience you get in a classic or independent cinema. 

With that in mind, we thought we’d take a look at some of the best cinemas in West London, from independents like The Everyman to classic cinemas like the Odeon Luxe.

 

Classic cinemas in West London

 

Cineworld Cinema in Wembley

 

In terms of convenience, it doesn’t get much better than this. The Cineworld Cinema in Wembley is the shortest of walks from our Quintain Living apartments. The nine-screen cinema is still very new, which makes it the perfect spot to catch the latest releases. It’s also surrounded by more than 20 restaurants and cafes in the London Designer Outlet, so if you don’t fill up on popcorn, you’ll find plenty more food to enjoy.

 

Odeon Luxe Swiss Cottage 

 

At the Odeon Luxe in Swiss Cottage, every seat on every row has been designed for maximum comfort, so you can relax and recline - yes, recline - during your film. As well as more legroom and personal space, every seat also has its own built-in table so you can enjoy food from the in-house bar, which serves traditional film-goers’ favourites and alcoholic drinks.

Lexi Cinema

 

Ever wondered what a social enterprise boutique cinema might look like? You’re about to find out. The Lexi Cinema in Kensal Green is a UK-first, being both independent and predominantly volunteer-run. It’s also absolutely gorgeous, with a stunning 80-seater auditorium and a programme that’s filled with special events, such as baby-friendly screenings, alongside mainstream releases. 

 

The Everyman

 

Sometimes, you want nothing more than to curl up on the couch and watch your favourite film. If that sounds like your perfect evening, head down to The Everyman on Baker Street. Both of the screens at this independent cinema are surrounded by comfy couches complete with scatter pillows and side tables so you can make yourself at home. There’s also a bar serving sharing plates, pizzas, wine and cocktails, so give yourself an extra few minutes to get your order in before the film begins. 

 

Electric Cinema

 

Head on down to Portobello Road in Notting Hill to get plenty of wow factor at this glamorous independent cinema that’s more than 100 years old. As well as retaining many of its original features, the Electric Cinema also has big comfy chairs, sofas and even beds complete with cashmere blankets in the front row. There’s also a foyer bar serving cocktails, wine and Champagne, as well as a diner that starts serving breakfast at 8am and stays open until 1am on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. 

 

The Gate Picturehouse

 

Also in Notting Hill is the independent, boutique cinema called The Gate, part of the Picturehouse Group. Housed in a beautiful, grade-II listed building, The Gate has just one screen in an auditorium with classic red velvet chairs, draped red curtains and ornate features. You’ll find a good selection of wine, coffee, popcorn and ice cream in the foyer, which you can enjoy with an eclectic programme that includes new releases, vintage films and live screenings from the National Theatre.
